My worn-out tablet

Tablet

Today I noticed that my tablet is a bit worn-out. Funny thing is that almost all scratches are matching the most used screen controls. So I made small experiment: I took a photo of the tablet, increased contrast in sensitive area and added a layer with screenshot from Lightroom which is (together with Photoshop) my probably most used graphic application. And as you can see on the picture, it matches perfectly ;-)

New Sigma 50mm f1.4

I just bought new prime lens for my Pentax camera. It's Sigma 50mm f1.4 and I was surprised by the image quality and smooth bokeh. I took some sample pictures, you can find them below. There seems to be some visible aberration (on the picture with guitar), but this can be fixed in post process. Overall it's not so bad, what do you think?

New before/after images in gallery

I have posted three different before/after images in my gallery. Below
you can find the end results. One image is HDR (the old van), others are edited only
in Lightroom without any Photoshopping. I think Lightroom is very
powerful tool for editing images and in some areas it can fully
replace Photoshop. Sometimes I edit images in Photoshop and import it
back to Lightroom for fine tuning. New Lightroom 3 adds even more
functionality, I especially like the grain tool, B&W pictures with
added realistic film grain look very well.

Wedding magazine cover retouching

It is always nice to see the results of your work printed in magazine :-) I made this cover photo retouching for Czech wedding magazine Tvoje Svatba & Rodina. Original photograph was taken by Dimir Stastny on Wedding Dress Competition - this dress from designer Tereza Snajdrova was the winner. Model is Miss Czech Republic 2009, Zuzana Jandova.

Creating photo-realistic digital painting

This is a picture of my wife painted in Photoshop using my Wacom
tablet. Painting is based on photograph that I took last autumn.
I tried to achieve certain photo-realism in face and hair areas,
but to leave other parts of the image painted just with rough brush.
I started with rough painting of main shapes and basic color.
Then I added more and more details, painted hair with thin brush added
shadows in face etc. After that I painted skin texture, created some
imperfections and finally adjusted colors. In below gallery you can see
different stages of this digital painting. I hope you like the result :-)

I just found my photo of simple measuring tape in local food magazine

Apetit

I just wonder why editors want to spend extra money on pictures that can be very easily captured by themselves? Anyway, I'm glad they bought it :-)

What I like in new Lightroom 3.0 Beta

Adobe recently released for public new Beta version of Lightroom 3.0. Even if on the first sight it looks pretty much the same as the older 2.x version, there are quite a few new things that were improved.

First thing you will probably notice is the improved Import dialog, now it’s more intuitive and user friendly. You can toggle between two modes, with and without thumbnails. Also it is possible to easily apply selected Develop settings for all photos during Import.
For Black & White photos Adobe also improved the handling a bit. You can find separate switch for Color and B&W photos in the Basic options dialog. Selecting desired color mode is then changing other options in other dialogs.

I like also new feature that was added to Lightroom 3.0 - Film grain. With this tool you can simulate film grain on your B&W photos. It looks pretty good, you can even modify the size of film grain which is perfect. What I would like to have is the Film grain presets for most popular B&W film materials such as Ilford FP or Kodak Tri-X.
When exporting photos for web usually you would like to use some sort of watermarking. This option is now available in Lightroom 3.0 under Export dialog. The settings are just basic, you can use text or image and change the opacity. You can also save the watermark settings as a New preset and use it later when exporting your pictures.

The complete list of new features from Adobe is available here:

  • Brand new performance architecture, building for the future of growing image libraries
  • State-of-the-art noise reduction to help you perfect your high ISO shots
  • Watermarking tool that helps you customize and protect your images with ease
  • Portable sharable slideshows with audio—designed to give you more flexibility and impact on how you choose to share your images, you can now save and export your slideshows as videos and include audio
  • Flexible customizable print package creation so your print package layouts are all your own
  • Film grain simulation tool for enhancing your images to look as gritty as you want
  • New import handling designed to make importing streamlined and easy
  • More flexible online publishing options

You can download the new Lightroom 3.0 Beta here.

Changing summer photo to winter theme

Sample00

I was recently asked by Czech wedding magazine to change for them one nice wedding photo (taken by very good wedding photographer Pavol Bigos) to winter theme as the whole issue was about winter weddings.

The original photo had quite a few of grass straws in the bottom so first thing was to remove them in Photoshop. Then I went trough my own photo gallery and selected winter pictures with nice snow in the background and foreground. After that I started to mask the groom and bride carefully. I used two or three foreground layers for the snowdrift hiding the shoes. Next step was to blend different background pictures together and do the necessary painting to blend all pictures together. It was also important to properly adjust colors, as this is a winter image I preferred cold colors. For final color/tone adjustments I usually use Lightroom where I import the image and do the final touch. Hope you like it ;-)
